Original work completed for the Portuguese Fisheries ministry to help develop offshore aquaculture on this island in the Atlantic Ocean. The programme for development included a pilot project to trial various different species and then two separate commercial farms for local firms Aquaiha and Ilhapeixe (names subsequently changed). Both farms grow Sea Bream (Sparus Aurata) but have also done trials with on growing hatchery produced Amberjack (Seriola) and Mahi Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus). Kames designed and supplied the offshore farms using adapted conventional technology to enable successful marine fin fish production in what is possibly the most exposed cage farm location in the world.
|
Total exposure to the south (next stop south pole at around about 7,500 miles) and occasional seas with wave /swell combinations exceeding 12 meters! Production from both farms varied from year to year but has reached a steady 600 to 700 tonnes in the last few of years.

Aquabaia Site Renovation 2017
The Aquabaia site at Ribeira Brava was completely renovated by Kames in 2017 which incuded enlarging all the original Kames 315 60m 2 ring cages to 70m 2 ring 315 partially decked units and installing new 40m 250 2 ring cages .This will boost the farm production to over 1000 tonnes per year.
A new site was installed by Kames for Marismar , a new presence on the island. This included a full environmental study, mooring design, cage supply and installation. The new farms survived the largest storm in almost 25 years to hit the south of the island in February 2018 .
